# Harry Potter: source record and draft status

**Draft, not released.** This pack covers Hogwarts grounds and Hogsmeade. It does not claim a complete map of Britain or all Harry Potter locations. The selected map appears in the 2014 Bloomsbury children's editions, not the mapless 1997 first edition. The first-book label is *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone* (US title: *Sorcerer’s Stone*).

## Published coordinate authority

Tomislav Tomić’s published Hogwarts map, 794 × 605 pixels, is the complete uncropped overview and the coordinate authority. `P(x,y) = [2x−794, 2y−605]`; the 3D extent is 1588 × 1210. Other references corroborate relationships but never overrule this plate or get averaged into its geometry. The image is credited to its artist and publisher; no licence, ownership or endorsement is claimed.

## Visually reviewed references

Chosen registration anchor. Castle above the lake, Hogsmeade northwest, station south, Quidditch west and forest east. Nine local labels plus the school title. Pictorial perspective compresses distances; use ground contact points, not spire tips.

### 2. Hogwarts Castle and Grounds, 20th anniversary editions

[Levi Pinfold / Bloomsbury](https://www.arenaillustration.com/news/2017/06/harry-potter-20th-anniversary-editions/) · world · reviewed 2026-10-02

Confirms the same broad grounds arrangement and lake promontory. Castle and station are much larger and forest sparser in perspective. Used to compare relationships and roof silhouettes, not to move the Tomić anchors.

### 3. Sketch of Hogwarts by J. K. Rowling

Author’s north arrow and notes confirm southern lake arrival, the station across the lake, a northern front entrance, west pitch and extensive eastern forest. Three hoops at each pitch end; pumpkin patch by the cabin. Sketch omits exact village street positions.

Published companion panoramic map. Confirms lake between castle and station, forest beyond the hut, western village and pitch. Its exaggerated river, gorge, stylised colours and shifted panoramic spacing are not substituted for the selected book plate.

### 5. An Unguided Tour of Hogwarts, Wizarding Almanac

[Peter Goes / Bloomsbury](https://www.startingharrypotter.com/explore/almanac/start?mapType=hogwartsCastle) · interior · reviewed 2026-10-02

Official vertical castle map, inspected for stacked towers, round chambers, Gothic windows and irregular roof profiles. It is a diagrammatic cross-section, not an exterior footprint. No outdoor placement or walkable room plan is inferred from it.

### 6. Hogwarts Grounds and Hogsmeade, book-based fan reconstruction

[LukeGki, independent fan cartographer](https://hogwartslukegki.wordpress.com/floor-plan-maps/grounds-hogsmeade/) · world · reviewed 2026-10-02

Reviewed the complete outdoor setting. Castle overlooks lake, station is across the water, hut sits beside forest, and village lies beyond the gates. Compass, lake footprint, mountain backdrop, village scale and pitch-to-castle spacing differ from the selected Tomić plate. These differences are recorded rather than averaged into the authoritative source. Used only to cross-check relationships; this artwork is not a site overlay or texture.

Five distinct outdoor works count toward the required five. The interior cross-section does not. Local research copies, retrieved asset URLs and checksums are retained in `research.json`; these reference copies are not public site textures.

## Place coverage and interpretation

All 25 selectable places have individual research records in `research.json` and source links in `world.js`. Fifteen anchors are measured from labels/building bases on the selected plate. Ten Hogsmeade shop/house positions are explicitly interpreted; the printed map does not label a street-by-street shop plan. Chapter references from the Harry Potter Lexicon are secondary references, not a claim to have inspected those novel pages. Place records are marked partial where architecture or exact placement is not established.

The castle uses original round turrets and Gothic roofs; the wooden cabin, thatched cottages, forest, station and six open Quidditch hoops use the cited descriptions. Building heights, courtyard arrangement, colours, seasonal grass/snow and anonymous village lots are interpretations. No film/game building footprints, secret passages or walkable interiors are claimed. The series-era village includes shops introduced after book one; no plot outcomes are exposed.

## Exact-geography work still required

The southwest lake outline no longer takes a diagonal shortcut across the water. That manual source trace still needs an ink-edge and rendered review. The mountain footprint, complete forest boundary, railway and road paths need full tracing against the selected plate. Fifteen correct point anchors alone do not satisfy this requirement. Printed perspective cannot establish metric elevation or a complete castle floor plan.

`registration.json` deliberately remains pending. Functional checks for dry buildings, finite geometry, bounded life and the measured anchors do not certify every geographical feature. The full source and desktop/mobile transition review must pass before publication; see `docs/NEW-WORLD-STANDARD.md`.
