# Mistborn — map and art direction

Scope: The Final Empire, before the trilogy changes its geography. No plot outcomes or later character revelations. This is an original stylised fan atlas, not an official map or a reconstruction of every street.

## Evidence used

- [Official trilogy art gallery](https://www.brandonsanderson.com/pages/the-mistborn-saga-the-original-trilogy): Isaac Stewart’s Final Empire and Luthadel maps. Read visually for relative coastlines, regions, river, gates and landmarks. City coordinates use a normalised image frame; scale and incidental buildings are interpretive. The publisher’s map images are references, not shipped assets.
- [Sanderson’s map annotation](https://www.brandonsanderson.com/blogs/blog/annotation-mistborn-maps): historical city-map character, cramped districts, eight metal-named gates. This informs the layout rather than a regular modern street grid.
- [Chapter Two](https://www.brandonsanderson.com/blogs/blog/mistborn-chapter-two): ash-covered urban surfaces, tall noble keeps, river commerce and the palace’s many spires. Materials and lighting derive from these descriptions; exact building plans are our designs.
- [Architectural annotation](https://www.brandonsanderson.com/blogs/blog/annotation-mistborn-chapter-thirty-part-one): Venture’s cathedral inspiration, Lekal’s pyramid, Hasting’s tower, Elariel’s stained-glass ceiling. **The linked annotation contains plot spoilers.** Only the architectural notes informed the models.
- [Official mistcloak explanation](https://faq.brandonsanderson.com/knowledge-base/what-does-a-mistcloak-or-mistcoat-look-like/): separate cloth strips, rather than one solid cloak. Vin’s twelve-strip model and rooftop pose are original staging, not a claim about a scene in the novel.

## This world’s rules

Ash grey / iron blue / pewter / amber glass. Monumental keeps, compressed stone housing, severe industrial chimneys, restrained vegetation, silver mist. Kredik Shaw has a bespoke clustered-spire composition; the noble houses deliberately have different silhouettes. Do not apply Raven Scholar’s gardens, animal emblems, purple tile palette or larch architecture to this world.

Landmark coordinates are approximate interpretations of the published maps. Minor roads, parcels, heights, windows, interiors and character locations are not established canon. The surface camp at Hathsin is interpretive. The map contains a representative set of named settlements, not every village in the novels.

## September 29 map revision

Luthadel's wall outline, river bend and named anchors were visually registered to the official 2014 leatherbound city map in the trilogy gallery. Coordinates below use the inner frame, left/top = 0, right/bottom = 1; these are hand-read estimates, not surveyed precision.

| Anchor | u | v |
| --- | ---: | ---: |
| Keep Venture | .689 | .314 |
| Keep Lekal | .827 | .338 |
| Kredik Shaw | .671 | .495 |
| Keep Hasting | .379 | .488 |
| Keep Elariel | .456 | .668 |
| Steel Gate | .194 | .176 |
| Tin Gate | .673 | .207 |
| Pewter Gate | .943 | .265 |
| Zinc Gate | .963 | .518 |
| Brass Gate | .858 | .831 |
| Copper Gate | .605 | .930 |
| Bronze Gate | .286 | .885 |
| Iron Gate | .016 | .459 |

The full Empire overview also uses the user-selected grayscale reference displayed at [CosmereMaps](https://www.cosmeremaps.com/mistborn). That site credits [MapEffects' fan redraw](https://www.deviantart.com/mapeffects/art/Mistborn-The-Final-Empire-Map-Brandon-Sanderson-907741466); it is not itself a publisher plate. No bitmap from either source is bundled. Coastlines, engraving strokes, terrain and 3D models are generated locally. The overall relationships are source-informed; precise coast vertices and minor settlement layouts remain approximate.

The 165 irregular city blocks, residential bays/turrets, heights, courtyards, small streets and people are original staging. They are not an exact tracing of the printed street network. World-scale rivers are continuous painted lines rather than discrete excavated cells; lakes and the detailed city river use actual water surfaces. Ash and mist are optional for this world, not global effects.

Terrain refinement (29 September 2026): mountain chains now use continuous heightfield ridges along the existing source paths. Seven Ashmount anchors use cratered relief. Each town has a local terrain clearing, including Tremredare, without moving its published-map anchor. Ink mountain symbols are separate from the close relief.
