# Roshar — The Way of Kings scene audit

Verified 2026-10-01 (October rebuild; the 30 September audit below is kept and marked where superseded). **82 displayed places audited: 60 in `world`, 19 in `shattered-plains`, 3 in the new `urithiru` scene.** `research.json` is the per-place evidence ledger. Counts: **31 supported, 47 partial, 4 interpretive**. These are evidence statuses, not claims that every mesh is canonical.

This is a bounded audit of the implemented scenes, **not exhaustive novel coverage or an inventory of every Rosharan settlement**. No later-book plot event or battle result is staged. Roshar correctly names the world and its mapped continent; the series is *The Stormlight Archive*, the book *The Way of Kings*.

## October 2026 rebuild (supersedes the per-city notes in “What changed and why”)

The per-city research is `docs/research/cities/the-way-of-kings.json` (38 briefs, 15 missing places, 15 omitted names, 62 sources; Coppermind articles were read through Internet Archive snapshots because the live site returned HTTP 403, so chapter locators are the wiki’s own footnotes). Every city is now a **generated settlement** (`scene.settlements`, docs/REALISM.md §Settlements) built from its brief — house count, style family, districts, palette, walls, gates, port and life — plus authored landmarks. Streets, lots, gardens and every house design are procedural interpretations.

- **6,619 generated buildings on the world map** (29 settlements; brief target 6,717) and **929 in the Shattered Plains camps and market** (target 1,410: the craters are only ~90–110 m across at this scene’s scale, so the camps hold fewer than the briefs ask). Counts per place are in `research.json`.
- **Ports:** every coastal city with a harbour in its brief has generated quays, piers, moored ships, cranes and (where the brief says so) a lighthouse; Ru Parat and Varikev add authored moles. Kasitor’s harbour is **not** drawn: this pack’s coast trace has no water within reach of its plate dot, and the bay is not invented. Sesemalex Dar likewise stays inland: the plate shows its narrow inlet, but the pack’s trace lacks it and its course could not be registered without inventing it.
- **Moved anchors (research re-measurement of the WoK plate):** Kharbranth (1144,924)→(1123,917), Sesemalex Dar (665,897)→(699,887), Shulin (1598,646)→(1599,637). `tools/world-packs-regression.mjs` follows Kharbranth’s new anchor.
- **Kharbranth:** a wedge inlet is carved at the plate dot (the trace lacked it) with even terraces up the cleft, the Conclave’s white carved façade and three squat metal domes, two hospitals, bell frames and a harbour filling the inner inlet. No farmland (author annotation; the painter now honours `farm: 0`).
- **Kholinar:** eighteen banded sandstone windblades (no windows, never masonry), the palace on a raised plateau at the north end with its entry court, gardens and river landing, the circular Monastery Dais with chapels joined to the palace by the Sunwalk, the central arena and temple, generated walls with eight gates. The outline follows the Oathbringer plan (south at top) in spirit only: a rounded inverted triangle. The plan and windblades are later-book geography (minor spoiler); the occupation is not shown.
- **Azimir, Vedenar, Thaylen City, Hearthstone, Valath, Silnasen, Panatham, Kurth, Rall Elorim, Sesemalex Dar, New Natanan, Mourn’s Vault, Revolar, Rathalas:** signature landmarks per brief (Bronze Palace ring of domes and the Grand Market dome; hexagonal walled core; round Ancient Ward, terrace streets, Royal Ward palace, ten temples, clock tower, Gemstone Reserve and Oathgate garden; breakwall ridge, white manor, silos; Holy Enclave cloister; royal keep; round ancient platforms; reservoir with island temple; trench pattern; stormward wall and stormwatch tower; vault keep; inner wall arcs; quiet stone remnants in a dry rift). Each is recorded as an interpretation.
- **Shinovar** keeps its distinct character: a Shin village of clay-and-earth houses with thatch and shingle (no stone), orchards and fields, and Shinovar’s trees resized to a believable scale. **The Reshi Isles** keep their warm green tint; no Reshi town is mapped, so none is placed.

### Places added in October

| Place | Evidence | Spoiler | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thaylen City | Oathbringer world map dot (1596,1305) → WoK display (1170,1027) by a 16-anchor affine fit, RMS 2.3 px (research) | minor (geography) | The pack’s island coast ran ~16 px south of the plate coast here; the north shore was redrawn locally round the dot. |
| Hearthstone | handwritten x on the Oathbringer map of Alethkar → (1494,492) by an 8-anchor rotated fit, RMS 3.9 px | none | One of the most described places in the book. |
| Northgrip | WoK plate dot (1271,446) | none | Labelled on the plate; the earlier pack omitted it. |
| Mourn’s Vault | WoK plate dot (1480,464) | none | Labelled on the plate; north-west of Hearthstone as the text says. |
| Revolar | Oathbringer map dot → (1458,561) | minor (geography) | Its occupation is not shown. |
| Sea of Spears | lake drawn on the WoK plate beside Rathalas, named on the Oathbringer Alethkar map | none | Traced approximately along the corridor the pack had drawn as a river. |
| The Valley | WoK plate label | minor | Region label only. |
| Urithiru | Oathbringer map dot (1227,964) → (902,780) | **major** | World-map landmark at 0.45× size plus a dedicated `urithiru` scene at full scale; hidden until the reader turns on later-book places. |
| Shin village | none (interpretive) | none | Placed by us in the Shinovar valley; no Shin village is mapped. |

Omitted with reasons: Klna (Oathbringer dot lies ~50 px north of this trace’s Thaylenah shore, so placing it would invent an island), Narak (major spoiler and outside the WoK Prime Map’s explored field), Horneater summit villages (unmapped; steam-vent villages from chapter 46 would be invented positions), Yeddaw, Zawfix and Berizhet (later-book map towns with no WoK role), and the brief’s fifteen omitted names (Davar estate, the Fu villages, Abamabar, the Valley of Truth, Reshi islands, Akinah, the Alethkar-map towns, Hearthstone’s neighbour villages, Jokasha, Feverstone Keep, the Purelake fortress, Sween/Torriqqam, Rianal, Shadesmar cities).

### Spoiler handling

`spoiler: 'major'` on a place, portal or scene keeps it hidden — geometry, label, portal, search result and scene tab — until the reader turns on later-book places (a reveal dialog on the Urithiru tab or search result, or the toggle in the help panel; remembered per book). `later: 'minor'` places (Thaylen City, Revolar, The Valley) are visible with a note on their card that their position comes from a later-book map.

### Terrain

The world, Shattered Plains and Urithiru bakes were re-run with `tools/bake-terrain.mjs`. Towns on steep shores and mountain feet get explicit-height ramps clipped to their land (`hillside()`, `coastal()` in world.js) so a generated town is never half-built; the bake keeps those heights exactly. `npm run check` confirms the coastline (< 2 % cells changed), no town in a pit and the ranges’ crests.

## Evidence hierarchy and access limits

1. [Isaac Stewart’s published Roshar plate](https://coppermind.net/w/images/Roshar.jpg), visually inspected as a reproduction, supplies named geographic markers. The reproduction is 2560 × 1600, registered at a 1996 × 1248 display size. Scene coordinates subtract [1000,640]; no rotation or affine reshaping is applied. Color is not treated as book-one color canon. The [author’s world-map annotation](https://www.brandonsanderson.com/blogs/blog/annotation-the-way-of-kings-world-map) identifies Isaac’s work and explains the southern-hemisphere continent and Julia-set basis. The rejected 2003/Prime maps on that page are **not** the reference.
2. [Published Shattered Plains plate](https://coppermind.net/w/images/Shattered_Plains.jpg), Isaac Stewart, *The Way of Kings*, visually inspected at 1200 × 795. North up, working crop [30,20]–[1170,750]. P=[(x−600)×3,(y−385)×3]. Three scene metres per image pixel is illustrative; it is not a measured real-world distance.
3. [Published Alethi Warcamps illustration](https://images.fantasymapsexplorer.com/images/maps/stormlight-archive-way-of-kings-alethi-warcamps-map.webp), Isaac Stewart, visually inspected. Its handwritten note lists the ten camps right-to-left and marks Dalinar, the market and royal hill. **The plate calls itself idealized.** It is perspective art, stormward toward the bottom, not a north-up street survey. Interior plans, building counts, hill dimensions and bearing transfer are interpreted.
4. [Author’s chapter-three annotation](https://www.brandonsanderson.com/blogs/blog/annotation-the-way-of-kings-chapter-3), read directly, supports Kharbranth’s trade dependence and lack of farmland. [Gollancz’s chapters 1–3 sampler](https://www.gollancz.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Way-of-Kings-1-3.pdf), chapter 3 *City of Bells*, printed p. 53, supplied an indexed primary excerpt about the steep coastal city, painted blocks and square windows. The direct PDF endpoint returned 404; this is **indexed-excerpt access, not a claim to have read a complete PDF**. [The publisher sampler hosted by Barnes & Noble](https://img1.imagesbn.com/pImages/special-collections/gpc/pdf/Sanderson_Sampler_Full_File.pdf) also exposes indexed passages from chapter 3 and Ishikk’s I-1, including Fu Namir; direct full-PDF access failed and its page numbers are not asserted.
5. Coppermind and, where useful, chapter-specific Stormlight Archive Wiki articles are **secondary evidence**. Many direct pages returned 403; indexed article text/notes were available to the web search tool. Those articles mix books and the RPG. The ledger names the particular section and chapter when actually recoverable, and explicitly records missing locators. Current rulers, later occupations, exact later city plans, RPG-only details and later revelations were filtered out. A chapter cited by an article is not represented as an independently read novel page.

No raster reference is added to the distributed pack. Coastlines, primitive compositions, terrain and materials are authored scene data. Search results containing fan roleplay, unsourced house/ruler names or unrelated real-world names were rejected. The author's deleted-scene sample and *The Way of Kings Prime* are excluded.

## What changed and why (30 September; city notes superseded by the October rebuild above)

- **Kharbranth:** a rising coastal miniature with colored plaster blocks, switchbacks, bell-frame symbols and a white stone Conclave entrance with low metallic domes. The library is not an isolated tower. Four bands and all building/bell counts are illustrative. [Conclave](https://coppermind.net/wiki/Conclave), structure/main entrance, complements chapter-three evidence.
- **Kholinar:** three unfenestrated rock-fin polygons around angular courts and a stepped palace. [Kholinar](https://coppermind.net/wiki/Kholinar), geography/windblades, supports the physical motif. **A book-one windblade passage was not independently recovered**; the aggregate article includes later descriptions. This model does not claim the exact number, strata, wall height, tunnels or later palace program. Natural fins explicitly use no facade style.
- **Kasitor:** brick courts, harbor viewing frontage and small gold pedestal symbols, from [Kasitor](https://coppermind.net/wiki/Kasitor), citing I-5 (Axies). Cusicesh is not a permanent statue. The inherited `kasinor` id is intentionally retained for saved links; display name is Kasitor.
- **Valath:** an interpreted scholarly court at the leeward mountain city, supported by [Valath](https://coppermind.net/wiki/Valath), note 2/chapter 7 on the Holy Enclave. Exact cloister, curates’ architecture and later spanreed infrastructure are not established here.
- **Sesemalex Dar:** dry excavated corridors, protective lips and recessed buildings, replacing a generic raised town. [Sesemalex Dar](https://coppermind.net/wiki/Sesemalex_Dar) identifies chapters 54–55 for its pattern/troughs/drainage. The three-branch plan is original, not a canonical religious diagram.
- **Western and minor cities:** Azimir, Panatham, Rall Elorim, Kurth, Eila, Ru Parat, Elanar, Silnasen and eastern Shulin/Varikev/Karanak now have separate authored courts, footprints and terrain relationships. Their material choices and most local plans remain **partial**. Azimir’s rounded civic roofs are expressly art direction; the later Bronze Palace and Grand Market are not back-projected onto every western city. Rathalas keeps a neutral low locator to avoid both an invented thriving town and later-book backstory.
- **Seven mapped additions:** Vedenar, Dumadari, Fu Namir, Icewater, New Natanan, Dawn’s Shadow and the Shallow Crypts. These come from the same inspected Roshar plate. Vedenar’s patterned identity has chapter-33 support; its six-sided court is only a symbol. Dumadari is supported by chapter-3/5 references. Fu Namir is named in I-1; applying Purelaker rounded houses at its marker is a **regional inference**, not a recorded village plan. Icewater does not become a glacier, and Shallow Crypts does not become a speculative giant necropolis. Dawn’s Shadow remains a modest landmark because this audit does not establish its urban scale.
- **Geography:** the Purelake is now an inland shallow-water cut behind a land barrier instead of the inherited open-sea connection. Horneater Peaks, Misted Mountains and Unclaimed Hills remain connected terrain. Babatharnam, Tarat Sea and Ocean of Origins have named coverage. Supplemental hand-registered coastal pieces restore the New Natanan peninsula and Icewater’s island while preserving the original main trace arrays and existing named anchors.
- **Warcamps:** all ten retain their published anchors and order, but now have different command footprints and shelter courts. Camp palettes and exact contents are artistic choices, not a verified highprince color/building inventory. Long shelter bars run east–west to present their narrower ends stormward. Dalinar has low command bunkers; Sadeas has bridge storage and more irregular tents. Most detailed camp-specific descriptions in current reference articles are mixed-era; the individual plans are not claimed as canonical.
- **Market and royal hill:** the market uses canopies and sheds. The royal complex has an asymmetric summit composition plus separately named Gallery of Maps, Feasting Basin and Dueling Arena. The published illustration proves their association; placement and footprints are interpreted. [Feasting Basin](https://coppermind.net/wiki/Feasting_basin) identifies chapters 22/54 for flooded feasts and raised gathering platforms. **Five platforms are an artistic model count; the article’s explicit count derives from a later book.** No later duel or battle is depicted.

## Registration ledger

All inherited named anchors are retained. Regions and seas use readable label anchors, not exact-point geographic claims. Every coordinate has a per-place note in `research.json`.

|---|---|---:|---:|
| Roshar | Kholinar | 1508 | 620 |

| Plains | Bethab | 117 | 594 |
| Plains | Sebarial | 145 | 672 |
| Plains | Tower plateau center | 1030 | 398 |

Coasts and ranges are hand-registered and simplified, not pixel-perfect. The additional island/peninsula polygons correct local land relationships, not the entire continental outline. The hundreds of small Plains cracks are deterministic Voronoi interpretations constrained by the inherited map composition; the large Tower silhouette is retained. Character cameos are staged points, not chapter-by-chapter position tracking.

## Geometry, validation and integration

The existing terrain implementation was checked before excavation: `hills[].h` and `ridges[].h` are additive and signed; `flatten[].height` is an absolute height, including lower values; `cuts` accept explicit water level/depth. No unsupported `mesas` field is used. Sesemalex Dar uses a raised surrounding pad at 14 with dry corridors at 6. The Purelake has an explicit 3.3 water level and bed at 2.2; the Feasting Basin has level 49 and explicit platform/bridge heights. All numerical dimensions are finite. World structures use `street.human:0.09`, detail uses `1`; these are visual symbol scales, not a claim that continental miniatures are full-size cities.

The pack contains 190 world structures and 248 detail structures, with no new runtime service or image dependency. Existing facade styles are used; painted Kharbranth and brick Kasitor have distinct material treatment. Parent-generated facade relief supplies normalized frames and eaves; no duplicated per-building trim meshes or oversized ornament program is added.

Checks: both JS files pass syntax checks; repository scene validation reports zero errors/warnings; CPU geometry compilation reports zero errors/warnings; generated terrain grids have no nonfinite samples; `node tools/research-audit.mjs the-way-of-kings` verifies exact 70/70 place coverage and URL/schema consistency. Source-served desktop screenshots covered the overview, Kharbranth, Kholinar and royal precinct; the final pass additionally inspected New Natanan’s restored peninsula, Fu Namir’s shore placement and Sesemalex Dar’s excavation. The final camera checks returned success with no console errors, exceptions or network failures. These checks establish data/render integrity, **not automatic lore verification or a mobile frame-rate guarantee**.

Parent integration: no shared engine or manifest edit is required by these data files. Preserve existing IDs and portal links, include `research.json`/`SOURCES.md` in source review, and rerun scene/research checks after shared renderer changes. If adding a future rock-fin primitive, Kholinar’s three unstyled `poly` entries can be replaced without moving its anchor. Fine bell meshes are optional; the present bells are small architectural frame symbols. Neither requested new shared geometry nor facade work blocks these compositions.

## Explicit remaining limits

(30 September text; Thaylen City and Hearthstone were added in October from the research agent’s registered Oathbringer maps, see above.) Thaylen City and Hearthstone were then not added: they have no city marker in the single world plate used for the new registrations. Supplemental authoritative map metadata was checked—[Isaac Stewart’s annotated Alethkar map](https://coppermind.net/wiki?mobileaction=toggle_view_mobile&title=File%3AAlethkar_Color.jpg) is an *Oathbringer* plate, and [Thaylen City’s detailed survey](https://coppermind.net/wiki?mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop&title=File%3AThaylen_City.jpg) includes later battle annotations. Neither was independently registered to this world transform. Their absence is a stated coverage limit, not a claim that they lack maps or book-one importance. A future expansion needs an inspected supplemental plate, documented coordinate transfer and a book-one appearance filter; guessing a world coordinate is not a substitute.

No page number is given unless actually accessible. Horneater summit village coordinates, most regional architectural traditions, most minor-city materials, camp street plans, exact royal-hill bearings, and exact elevation/distance scales remain unverified. Primary excerpts, author commentary, published map evidence, secondary chapter references and original design decisions stay separate in the JSON ledger.
